In Texas, home heating is often provided by a "Central Air" system:

1) Natural gas (or propane) furnaces

2) Electric

3) Electric Heat Pump

1) Natural gas (or propane) furnaces can be energy cost efficient.  For safety, care should be taken in several areas:  combustion air (fresh air) supply  ;  combusted air venting ;  gas piping  (including flexible gas lines) ; clearance to combustibles (burner compartment, combustion air flues, etc.)

2) Electric ("ohmic") heating is among the most expensive energy options.

3) Electric Heat Pumps are a good, energy efficient option for Central Texas. 

All heating systems should be regularly serviced and maintained.
